ABBOTSFORD BC – The Abbotsford Heat opened their inaugural season and treated their 5100+ fans to a fast paced, roller coaster ride on Friday night. Unfortunately for the home side, the San Antonio Rampage buckled down and found a way to erase a two goal deficit late in the third period to hand the HEAT a 6-5 OT loss. Burnaby’s Kris Chucko completed the triple, with a shorthanded goal, a power play goal and an even strength goal to notch a hat trick in the HEAT’s first ever game. Ryley Grantham will have the distinction of being the first HEAT player to light the lamp, deflecting a John Negrin point shot past Rampage goaltender Al Montoya at 8:37 of period one to open the scoring. Colin Stuart also scored a shorthanded marker, while Matt Keetley took the loss, despite being spectacular in goal while facing 43 shots on the evening. Sean Sullivan was the spoiler for the Rampage on Friday, converting a perfect feed from Viktor Tikhonov to provide San Antonio, with their first, and only lead of the game. telus08newsdog (more…)
Abbotsford BC – For the second consecutive evening, overtime was needed to decide the winner between the Abbotsford Heat and the San Antonio Rampage. Kevin Porter scored a power play marker to put the Rampage on the board early in the second period. Porter was able to slip his wrist shot thru traffic from the top of the right faceoff circle to beat HEAT goaltender Leland Irving at 3:10. Later in the second, with the HEAT back in the box, Jason Jaffray was able to pounce on a bouncing puck at the HEAT blue line and take off on a breakaway. After holding off Rampage defender Shaun Heshka the entire way down the ice, Jaffray was able to separate himself from Heshka, and faked out Rampage goalie Josh Tordjman to tie things up at one goal apiece. For Jaffray, who earlier in the day was reassigned to the HEAT, it was his first goal of the season and the HEAT’s third goal shorthanded in just two games. After a scoreless third period where both goaltenders, Leland Irving for the HEAT and Josh Todjman for the Rampage, were spectacular, the game headed to overtime…and controversy. HEAT forward Riley Armstrong was whistled for a borderline slashing call by referee Terry Koharski. Just 15 seconds later, the game was over as Sullivan hammered a shot past all the traffic in front of Leland Irving … (more…)
